MIPA J‐Day Breakout Sessions April 6, 2016

Session 1, 9:45‐10:30 a.m.

Write‐Off Contests ‐ MIPA Board Members Mary Gillis, Rolla HS, and Jennifer Higgins, Liberty North HS. The Write‐Off session is an onsite competition with multiple categories; students write an article, cartoon, feature, review, editorial, etc., based on the morning’s keynote presentation, “Beyond the Protest: Looking for Meaning When Campus Erupts.” There is a time limit, and onsite judges will judge the entries. General Write‐Off Students bring paper &pen/pencil. The winners are announced that afternoon. There is no limit to how many students can enter from each school, so write on! *Session Time: 9:45‐TBA (Session can run long pending Q&A from participants/presenters)

Photo Shoot‐Off ‐ Marc Russel & Karla Thompson, Lee’s Summit High School. The Photo Shoot‐Off session is also an onsite competition limited to two students per publication per school. Students will take pictures that day on campus, submit them in the time frame provided onsite, and be judged onsite. Students should bring digital camera, memory card & appropriate cords to download. *Session Time 9:45‐TBA (Session runs concurrently with other sessions as photographers will be completing the assigned task during the breakout sessions.)

“A Pulitzer Prize for Best Use of Drones? It Could Happen” ‐ by Pulitzer Project presenter Randy Picht, Director of the Reynolds Journalism Institute. This session will go over drone use and applications in the field of journalism and include how the future of journalism is shaping up. See a drone up close and find out how and when they can be used for reporting purposes.

Editorial Leadership (Repeating Session) ‐ by MIPA President Benjamin Merithew, Fort Osage High School. Come get insight on what to expect now that you have been chosen to be the next editor or producer of your school’s news media. Find out what qualities you will need to lead and manage that award‐winning staff, or to just get the first newspaper of the year out the door! Learn tips on how to organize your staff and get the most productivity out of every minute of class. There will be time for questions concerning journalism ethics and censorship issues.

What to Expect in Journalism School (Repeating Session) ‐ Members of the Association of Women in Sports Media at the Missouri School of Journalism. This session features information from current journalism students at MU on what new students can expect from their first year in a journalism program. Members of the AWSM will answer questions and concerns about being a first year J‐student as well. So, bring your questions.

Missourian Tour ‐ Professors Elizabeth Stephens & Mary Kate Metivier, Missouri School of Journalism. Check out the Missourian newspaper and find out how stories get from budget meetings to the press. You will get an insight to how the newspaper operates on a daily basis and see the inner workings of the facilities. *Session Time may run long due to location

Media Sales and Economics (Repeating Session) ‐ Julie Lewis Instructor, Digital Media Production Department of Communication, University of Central Missouri. Boost your media sales by taking a closer look at your current strategies and develop ways to improve your overall advertising sales. Ms. Lewis will cover business decision‐making situations to help serve your high school’s newsroom.

Interviewing: Who it Thommie Pong? ‐ Dan Mueller, Herff Jones. Every great story or caption has to start with an interview. Learn how to conduct an interview and get memorable quotes.

Designing Umbrella Coverage Using MODs ‐ Leah Blase, Herff Jones. Update your yearbook’s design and learn how to cover more and more on the same amount of design real estate.

Live Sports Broadcasting Best Practices (Repeating Session) ‐ Jim Powers, Midwest Regional Production Coordinator for NFHS  Network/PlayOn Sports. In this sessions broadcast students will get tips and tricks from a veteran Sportscaster on how to cover a live sporting event. Get insight on what it takes to prepare for the game, how to call the play‐by‐play and provide color commentary, and incorporate stats into the broadcast. Attendees will also see how the NFHS Network setup works and how they can get hands on experience by providing the service for their classmates, school, and community.

Lunch ‐ Students reserve one of the session times for lunch.

Beyond PuppyMonkeyBaby: Your future in strategic communication, advertising, public relations, and promotional video (Repeating Session) ‐ MU Professor Cynthia Frisby. Learn how you can turn your skills and creativity into fast paced and well paid careers in businesses, charitable organizations, and agencies around the world. When you think of advertising, you probably think about the Super Bowl and it’s funny, outrageous, and memorable ads. You may have seen the PuppyMonkeyBaby ad for Mountain Dew during this year’s game, but there’s more to Strategic Communication than advertising. The Missouri School of Journalism prepares you for exciting careers in social media, smartphone marketing, PR, promotional video, art direction, creative copywriting, and more. At MU, you’ll work in one of two student‐staffed advertising agencies working for real paying clients, Mojo Ad and AdZou . Strat Comm grads work for the NFL, ESPN, AirBNB, Google, Martha Stewart Living, and Shriners Hospitals as well as in advertising and PR agencies in cities such as New York, Dallas, Los Angeles, St. Louis, and Kansas City—even in Hong Kong, London, and Tokyo.

Women in Sports Media (Repeating Session) – Members of the Association of Women in Sports Media at the Missouri School of Journalism. Panelists Kylie Callura and Emily Roth will discuss the importance of what the Association for Women in Sports Media at Missouri does, what it stands for, and how it helps members personally and professionally. The organization is open to both women and men with a passion for sports journalism. They will answer questions about what it’s like to cover sports, how to navigate a male dominated industry as a female, and other questions students may have.

Stepping up Yearbook Design ‐ Dan Mueller, Herff Jones. See how photography, concept, coverage and reader aids can engage and excite your readers.

Let’s Sell! Tactics to Increase Yearbook Sales ‐ Leah Blase, Herff Jones. Yearbook is a business. Come to this session to learn an endless list of tactics to reach and engage your buyers.

Prior restraint in high schools and New Voices legislation (Repeating Session) ‐ Mark Schierbecker, MU Student. Join Mark to find out his experiences covering the protests last fall on MU’s campus and his experience with prior restraint. Find out how you can legally cover events in your school and community as a member of the scholastic press. Mark will also discuss the Cronkite New Voices legislation introduced earlier this year in the Missouri House of Representatives that will provided greater freedoms to student journalists both in high school and college.

Data Journalism (Repeating Session) ‐ MU Prof. Mike Jenner. This session covers how you can enhance your reporting by creating dynamic, interactive infographics out of the data used in your stories. Prof. Jenner will also cover how to find relevant data, clean it up and organize it so it can be visualized for infographic use. Students will see software demonstrations and information will be available on where to find data and free data visualization programs.

Sports Photography ‐ MU Student Tim Tai, photojournalist and Columbia Missourian Photo Editor. Join Tim as he takes you through the steps and tricks of providing great sports coverage for your publications. Tim is the Recipient of the 2016 First Amendment Defender Award, sponsored by Radio Television Digital News Foundation. He was a finalist in the 2014‐15 Hearst National Photojournalism Championship and took second place in News and Features Photojournalism Competition in the 2015‐16 Hearst Journalism Awards Program. So, this guy can teach you a thing or two about getting the award winning photo.

Virtual Reality Reporting (Repeating Session) ‐ MU Students Micheala Sosby, Daniela Vidal and Sarah Darby . If you are looking for the latest way to report stories, then this session is for you. Join these three students as they show you how tech is making it possible to tell stories in new ways, and how virtual reality makes it possible to immerse people and build empathy. Micheala, Daniela and Sarah will also have headsets available so you can experience VRI journalism.

Adviser Luncheon ‐ Teachers only. Visit and share ideas with other J‐Teachers from around the state and enjoy an optional boxed lunch.

Session 4, 12:45‐1:30 p.m.

Women in Sports Media (Repeating Session) – Members of the Association of Women in Sports Media at the Missouri School of Journalism.

Data Journalism (Repeating Session) ‐ Prof. Mike Jenner Prior restraint in high schools and New Voices legislation (Repeating Session) ‐ Mark Schierbecker, MU Student.

Editorial Cartooning—Then and Now ‐ Dan Martin Editorial Cartoonist for the St. Louis Post‐Dispatch and part of the Pulitzer Project. In this session, find out the ins and outs of editorial cartooning from an award winning journalist. Dan Martin will take you through the steps of making your point through cartooning in a concise, clear and effective way.

Newswriting ‐ Christine Jackson, MU J‐Student. This session features a detailed look at the process of writing and reporting. Christine will share her award winning piece over the Renz Prison in Jefferson City and show students best practices on getting background information, access to facilities and setting up interviews.

Campus Presentation ‐ MU admissions representative. Can’t go on the campus tour but want to find out about more about MU? This session will be in one location and provide information about attending the University. MIPA Meeting ‐ Teachers only. Join the MIPA Board for it’s annual business meeting and meet the newly elected officers. Come see what MIPA is doing or find out how you can help.
