Welcome, MIJA members. we’ve got exciting news!
The Missouri Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA) merged with the Missouri Journalism Education Association (MJEA) to create one unified press association for the state: MIJA. Our hope is this will make things less confusing for advisers across the state and help connect advisers around the state.
That said, the leaders of the new organization have created a new membership structure that combines things from both merging groups.
Membership will have a tiered structure moving forward, with different price points getting you different services. This new membership structure will allow us to offer more in terms of critiques, overall contests and JDay at the University of Missouri in the spring. Membership starts at the beginning of each school year and should be renewed during that time (August/September) if schools plan to participate in the monthly contests. Membership renewals must be submitted by January 31 of each school year if they wish to participate in contests or JDay.
The membership tiers are as follows:
*Publications are broken down into the following categories for contests and critiques: Newspaper/Newsmagazine, Online Publication, Podcast/Radio, Broadcasting, Yearbook, and Photojournalism/Photography. If a school does a print newspaper and an online news site, these should be considered as two separate publications even if they are produced by the same class.
$50 MIDDLE SCHOOL/JUNIOR HIGH MEMBERSHIP: (Not pictured) includes free attendance to JDay, participation in monthly contests, and nominations for staff/community awards EXCEPT for Student of the Year. These schools are also not eligible to compete in critiques and contests.
$50 BASIC MEMBERSHIP: includes free attendance to JDay, participation in monthly contests, nominations for Student Journalist of the Year, Adviser of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Taft Award, All-State Team and honor roll, but not overall critiques and JDay contests, which organizations could still enter but at a fee per individual entry. JDay contests limit each publication’s number of entries to eight overall. Cost for critique submissions is as follows: $45 for yearbook, $35 for print, $25 each for all others.
$100: for one overall publication and all other benefits. JDay contests are free to members at this level, with one overall publication critique submission, in addition to the other benefits listed in Basic Membership.
$200: for two overall publications and all other benefits. JDay contests are free to members at this level, with two overall publication critique submissions, in addition to the other benefits listed in Basic Membership.
$300: for three overall publications and all other benefits. JDay contests are free to members at this level, with three overall publication critique submissions, in addition to the other benefits listed in Basic Membership.
$400: Entire School (4+ publications). JDay contests are free to members at this level, with four or more overall publication critique submissions, in addition to the other benefits listed in Basic Membership.
