Print Challenge Winners Wow Judges

The print Challenge results are in! Judges were super impressed!

This closes out the Challenges for this school year — congrats to all the winners and competitors!

Yearbook

First Place: Selena Escutia, Ashlyn Dohrmann, Emma Thom of Staley High School

Judge’s Comments: I enjoyed the unified design of the first place spread. It worked very well from page to page. The quotes by students and images all come together to support the page’s theme. This is something so many student athletes deal with and certainly fits into a yearbook well. I am curious about the poll and when it was conducted? I would have liked that information. Personally, I have never heard of a “muscle scraper” and would have liked some of the information presented on the graphic explained in a little more detail.

Second Place: Madison Ellis, Elizabeth Vieth, Timothy Ellis of Hermann High School

Newspaper

First Place: Ian Toney, Sami Binning, Braden Clapper, Emma Suppes of Liberty North High School

Judge’s Comments: The first place entry had thorough storytelling and a true “newspaper feel.” I enjoyed seeing a vast array of sources and a strong overall design. However, I do have some issues with the writing. There were mechanical issues and, at times, I felt like that distracted from the content. Keep it clean and error free to avoid that. Also, I was a bit confused by the color scheme. Why not use the colors of the KC Chiefs since that is what this story is about? I would have liked to have seen some photography used, too. Regardless of what I would like to see improved, it was a strong entry and a lot of effort went into it. Also, I loved the graphics!

Honorable Mention:  Haley McAtee, Grace Cress, Haleigh Evans of Staley High School
