FEBRUARY WINNERS

First Place:  Kendyl Lay, Francis Howell Central

Senior Noah Keen celebrates winning a state title in the 138-pound weight class. Keen was the only male Spartan wrestler to win a title at the Class 4 Missouri championships over the weekend of Feb. 23-24. (Kendyl Lay (FHC))

Judge’s Comments: What an amazing reaction photo! Framed perfectly, great exposure and crystal clear. Plus, you captured a fantastic, storytelling moment. Nice work!

Second Place:  Finn Wenta, Park Hill South

Rozella Ranes, Junior, belts out a powerful and emotional solo song in the final act of the Musical “Into The Woods.” (Finn Wenta (PHS))

Judge’s Comments: Always nice to see something that isn’t sports–the girl is framed perfectly with the background, is in focus and the lighting works well, which is hard with stage lighting.

Third Place: Anna Simms, Liberty (Wentzville) 

Jumping high into the air, senior Evan Hargrove drives the lane for a layup as Fort Zumwalt South senior Luke Bass attempts to block the ball. “I try to not let anything affect me emotionally when playing,” Hargrove said. “My mind is normally focused on the possession that is currently happening.” Unfortunately, Liberty fell to South with a final score of 54-36. Both teams are tied atop the GAC Central standings with 8-2 league records. Hargrove has been playing basketball since he was in second grade and will continue to play in college. Judge’s Comments: A great example of a sports action photo–nice composition, good exposure, the ball is in it and it perfectly freezes the action/motion.

Surrounded by Black Student Union members holding up their phone lights, senior Ali Habila and friends sing “God’s Plan” by Drake during the BHM assembly. The BSU planned for weeks for this assembly, which drew an audience large enough to move it from the theater to the main gym.

Singing to Flounder, senior Sam Ragone performs as Sebastian in the theatre departments musical production of The Little Mermaid with senior Kaitlyn Seim. A lot of character work went into studying Sebastians crab walk, burning his legs after every show. Im pretty grateful that I got Sebastian, because not only did I get to sing some of the pretty iconic songs, but it was really fun to see how I could fit into the character as my own self, Ragone said.

Tap It In Play. Natilie Biere (7) squares up for a bunt against the Brookfield Bulldogs in the home game on October 4th. Biere made contact with the ball, placing it down the first base line. While Biere was thrown out at first, she advanced base runner, Anastyn Carter (8), to second base.

On September 8th, 2023, The Springfield community mourned the loss of a beloved teacher at Kickapoo High School, Ms. Barron. She was cheer coach who was loved by many and was described by many people as a bright light in everyones life. At that Fridays football game, the cheer squad organized a balloon release in her honor. As expected, the stand were packed out with supporters. Our Cheer and Poms teams wore pink matching t-shirts that said Momma B on the back and Be The Sunshine on the front, which was a saying she constantly said to everyone in her life. Senior Joslyn Magers, a cheer team member who was very close to Ms. Barron, proudly shows off her shirt to the crowd.

Students show their support for junior Ralph Yarl by participating in a “unity walk” April 18. Yarl was shot twice on April 13 when he accidentally went to the wrong house, attempting to pick up his siblings. “I’m really proud of our student body for coming out to support Ralph,” said senior Cayla Palmer, the president of Staley’s Black Student Union, the group who planned the walk. “At the end of the day, this whole unity walk is for Ralph, to support our fellow Falcon. We stand with him and support him.”

After Beating Oak Park High School 56-49 in the Class 6 District 8 Championship March 6, the boys basketball team celebrates their fourth straight district championship. The team previously beat Oak Park 64-36 on Dec. 15, but the team knew Oak Park would be a harder matchup now. “We knew that was probably the toughest team we were going to play all year,” senior guard Jared Lee said. “When we won, it was just a crazy feeling that we got that done because a lot of people didn’t think we could.”

Alexander Hutchcraft (11) wrestles during the state finals. During the match many technical violations were not called leaving coaches angry. “Wrestling really defines who I am today. It’s physically built me and mentally pushes you,” said Hutchcraft.

During the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions Dunk Contest Jan. 14, Central High School junior Antonio Starks-Fewell leaps over two people for the slam dunk. Starks-Fewell was one of the local players in the contest, where he finished third.

Richland sophomore Tucker Miller (left) puts up a shot over Dexter senior Logan Josupait during the second quarter of their contest on Monday night. Miller hit the bucket, but the Rebels never could get their offense going as the Rebels fell 84-30. With the loss for Richland and the win for the Bearcats, both teams’ records now stand at 4-2. The Rebels and Bearcats are both scheduled to play in the Bloomfield Christmas Tournament next week, with Dexter seeded in the No. 1 spot and Richland coming in at No. 12.

Wilbur the pig, played by senior Anna Wright, grasps for freedom from the Zimmermans oven during her performance in Charlottes Web. This was Wrights favorite moment in the play. Im picturing running from an intruder or just like a monster, Wright says about what goes through her head during the scene. Theater is important to me because it is a way to get a bunch of people with nothing to do in common in the same room to laugh together, to cry together, and teach moral lessons right in front of their eyes. And its really fun.
