First Place: Tommy Ruffin, North Kansas City High School
REACHING NEW HEIGHTS: Sophomore D’Mya Newton glides over the high jump bar, setting a new personal record of 5 feet, 3.75 inches. Nine area track and field teams competed at the 21st Annual Jerry Crews Track and Field Invitational on April 11 at the NKCSD District Activities Complex. D’Mya Newton placed second overall in the high jump event, only behind her older sister, Dede Newton, who jumped 5 feet, 9.25 inches for the top finish. (Tommy Ruffin/NKCHS)
Judge’s Comments: I hesitated to do a track photo for first place two months in a row, but this was a beautiful photo. Perfect lighting, crystal clear action captured and excellent composition.
Second Place: Allie Corlew, Richland R-1 School
“One Scream Too Late Richland Superintendent Carrie Tripp screams during the mock accident held at Richland on Friday. Tripp, along with junior Neveah Roach (laying on the car) and sophomore Ava Porter were a few of the actors who helped to portray the scene of a drunk driver who hit another vehicle and killed one of his classmates in the process. The scene even involved the student drunk driver receiving a field sobriety test and being taken away from the scene by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. ” (Allie Corlew/Richland)
Judge’s Comments: It’s amazing how realistic these mock accidents can look, especially in a great photo! Excellent composition, nice exposure and great angle to show the girl behind.
Third Place: (TIE) Isaac Swenson, Kickapoo High School, AND Avari Rausch, Francis Howell High School
Sophomore Nick Long (1) was greeted with cheers after hitting his first home run of the season. This hit helped lead his team to a win of 10-0 against a rival school. “After a home run everyone in the dugout dill jump up, hit each other’s arms and scream,” Long said. “It’s pretty cool to get up and have that moment.” (Isaac Swenson/Kickapoo)In an effort to break away from her defender, senior Rhianne Toebben (15) fights to regain the lead during a tough game against Westminster Christian Academy. (Avari Rausch/FrancisHowell)
Judge’s Comments: I couldn’t decide between reaction and action, so I went with a TIE for both. This reaction photo is exactly what we look for–true emotion–and great use of fast shutter speed to catch the boys mid-jump–just try to crop a little tighether. The action photo is fantastic in such a fast-moving sport. I like that you got the scoreboard behind them, but it (along with all that sky) does take away a little bit from the action and amazing facial expressions.
"FLYING THROUGH.
Senior Ansley Drake teaches her pole vaulting techniques to her teammates on April 19. Drake not only pole vaults for Liberty Highschool track team but also for her club team meaning she has practices back to back on weekdays in the spring. Drake has been doing pole vault her whole highschool career meaning she has plenty of tips to pass down to the younger classmen. “My favorite part of pole vaulting is all the people it’s connected me to. I have made some amazing friendships and they help make every practice and meet more memorable,” said Drake.
