Thursday’s Tips No. 7

#1. Drones. OK, if you have a “budget” like most teachers I know, you can’t afford one, but that doesn’t mean we can’t teach our students about them and the unique perspective they can bring to video and photography and journlaism in general. This site is pretty amazing. I love looking at their contest winners! http://www.dronestagr.am/contest/rewards/
dronestagram_2014#2. Speaking of… there’s even a Professional Society of Drone Journalists? Check it out! http://www.dronejournalism.org
#3. As well as… the Drone Journalism Lab (which isn’t afraid to hit on some of the “issues” – not just the positives – of drone journalism) http://www.dronejournalismlab.org
#4. When I was a yearbook adviser for over a decade, it was a constant battle to get kids to understand the importance of yearbook COPY and COVERAGE. This article has similar ideas / ways to brainstorm, etc. that I used in the classroom: http://www.walsworthyearbooks.com/idea-file/8160/spice-up-how-you-brainstorm-story-ideas/
#5. This site/page has a LOAD of helpful links for tv, web, yb, np, etc! Check it out: http://www.journaliststoolbox.org/archive/teaching-tools/
and #6… this site is a work in progress (( https://mipajournalism.com )) but your board is working hard to do these things:
  • Have our website we created this summer (see link above) with memership forms, resources, information, etc. We want it to be a place you can go for all you need from MIPA.
  • Revamp contests: better rubrics, contest categories, judges, and our goal is to move as much as possible online!
  • Spice up state JDay! Remember it’s April 8, 2015!
  • Mentoring! Look at our site… can you be a mentor? Do you need a mentor? Check it out!
  • Providing more content to help you in the classroom (Thursday Tips! *wink wink*) and more to come…
  • Locating and reaching out to Journalism Advisers all over the state to let them know they are not alone. Personally, I know some I have contacted already are first-year advisers, or the coach or business teacher who was told “you get to do yearbook” – and they are excited to hear there are other teachers in the state wanting to help them navigate the waters. If you know of anyone who could use some assistance, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or any board member and we will contact them to let them know that even if they are new to the game, or have no background in Journalism – they are not alone. 🙂
