Thursday’s Tips-Jan. 8, 2015

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l82gpA2YG8E&w=640&h=390] #1. I love my home state. I love helping people. I love journalism. Take those three loves and bam! it seems like somehow in Blue Jay Journal TV (www.bluejayjournal.com) we are often doing “social journalism” pieces and PSAs. Here is a great starting point for many people and places around MO that your students could do stories or PSAs about/for… that way those who need help can find it, while those who can help will. http://www.missourilife.com/life/a-helping-hand/ Remember:

Journalism can never be silent: that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault. It must speak, and speak immediately, while the echoes of wonder, the claims of triumph and the signs of horror are still in the air.#2. Speaking of social journalism… The RFK High School and College Journalism contest is ready for your submissions. If you have any print or broadcast piece that fits the criteria, go for it. It has been several years ago, but one year I had a student win. I still remember the day Ethel Kennedy contacted me to let me know that a piece my student had produced on “Loving Hearts Outreach” had won. The trip to DC to meet her and other journalists for the awards ceremony was something I have trouble putting into words. Here’s the link for more information. Please consider it. http://rfkcenter.org/2014-rfk-book-award-a-journalism-awards-call-for-submissions-2?lang=en

That is all for Thursday Tips. I know it’s just “two” and it fits the theme of social journalism, but I really feel our students can make a difference in the lives of people in our schools and in our community. It’s a wonderful thing (and fits my hashtag of #blessed in my mini bio). One last reminder, do not forget… Applications being accepted now The Missouri Interscholastic Press Association is pleased to announce that applications can be submitted now for the following big awards:
