A Note from the Judge:
This story succeeds in exploring a school project that aimed to bring down cultural barriers. The reporter employs a strong lead to pull in the reader by showcasing the contrast between the schools. Through in-depth reporting and interviewing, the project is clearly explained. By the end of the article, the reader sees how effective the project is at overcoming barriers, and how communicating with one another and being dedicated to learning about and understanding other people makes all the difference.
Second place: Hermann High School. Brenna Jones. The Paragon.
No other awards given.
Broadcast PSA Challenge
First place: First place: Washington High School. Emma Duncan, Payton Dubberke, Colton Souders, Katelyn Meyer. Blue Jay Journal TV
A Note from the Judge:
“Plastic Police” strikes a balance between relatable humor and the seriousness and urgency of the topic. The technical choices are strong throughout. Switching from black and white (the antiquated single-plastic use) to color (recycling/reusing) shows the stark contrast between personal choices. There’s sharp editing throughout, and the PSA gives good information, through both statistics and recommendations. By the end of the PSA, the viewer feels like avoiding single-use plastic is the responsible and cool thing to do.
Second place: Lee’s Summit North High School. Joy Covington. Bronco Television.
Third place: Park Hill South High School. Mary Garrett, Jacob Womack, Alexis Nigro. PHS-TV’s South Side Scoop.
Honorable mention: Liberty North High School. Tayler Gilbert, Bailey Reardon. KNET News.
